Golden Torch Gala Celebrates Academic Accomplishments Of FSU Student-Athletes
 
The student-athlete on each team with the highest GPA will be honored.

Florida State will host the 15th annual Golden Torch Gala this evening in the Tom and Ginny Futch Ballroom at the University Center Club. The FSU athletics department and the Seminole Boosters sponsor the black-tie affair each year. It is one of the few ceremonies of its kind, celebrating the academic achievements of Florida State's student-athletes.

Javier Garcia-Tunon, from men's track and field, will be honored as Overall Male Golden Torch Award Winner, with a perfect 4.0 grade point average in Business for the 2004-05 academic year. Five FSU female student-athletes, including three from the cross country team, earned the Overall Female Golden Torch Award with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. They are, from cross country: Stefanie Bechler (Education), Anne Clinton (Recreation and Leisure Services Administration) and Sydney Mondragon (Secondary Math Education) and Swimming and Diving's Emily Breen (Elementary Education) and Track and Field's Pamela Arnedos (English).

For the ninth consecutive year, the women's tennis team earned the Women's Team Golden Torch Award for the highest team grade point average (3.3), however, the women's tennis players were not alone as the women's golf team shared the honor with a 3.3 grade point average of its own. The Men's Team Golden Torch Award went to men's golf with a 3.046 grade point average.

The student-athletes on each team with the highest grade point averages received the Individual Golden Torch Awards. The winners are as follows:
